A geologist for the geological survey. Was widowed, His wife had been Rosanne Zealley (Rose) (d 1917), He died 28 Oct 1918 at the Drill hall Salisbury at 32. Geologist 1911 – 1918. Zealley received his geological training at the Royal College of Science, London, and afterwards was appointed Demonstrator in Geology there. At this time he worked upon the metamorphosed limestones of Donegal, and published a short note in the Geological Magazine for 1909. In 1909 Zealley went out to Southern Rhodesia as Curator to the Rhodesia Museum. In that capacity he saw the collections housed in the first part of a building specially designed for a museum. He made important contributions to the Museum Reports on the minerals, on the mineral resources, and on the gold-bearing rocks of Rhodesia; and wrote articles and papers on the local minerals and rocks. Zealley joined the Geological Survey of Southern Rhodesia in 1911, shortly after it was started, and remained in that service until the time of his death. His work lay chiefly amongst the meta- morphic rocks, and he took part in the mapping of several of the goldfields. He was particularly interested in the ore-deposits, their genesis, and the association of minerals in them. He had gained a wide knowledge of the mineral deposits of the country, and his work was inspired by the belief that for their efficient development a thorough and exact study of them was necessary. When, after the War broke out, the systematic mapping of the Geological Survey was suspended, he threw himself whole- heartedly into the task of assisting prospectors with the determination of minerals and with advice as to the nature of the deposits they had found. He also took an active part in the work of the Rhodesia Munitions and Resources Committee, which has done much to spread a knowledge of the mineral wealth of the Territory.

Mentioned on Joes’ 1992 Athlone Bulawayo memorial. Artist Alex Zwarenstein is famous thoughout the world for painting structural architecture and the elements that encompass it. Zwarenstein works in various mediums including oil, gouache and watercolor and his palette is vibrantly punctuated with contrasting surfaces of opaqueness and translucency. Zwarenstein was born in 1952 in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). At the age of 17, he left Africa for London, England. Zwarenstein spent 3 years studying art at the Royal Academy of Art in London where he received a Master’s Degree in painting and was a recipient of several awards including a William Turner Traveling Scholarship. Zwarenstein spent another 10 years working, teaching and developing his style, in London, before moving to the U.S. Zwarenstein’s professional experience includes working as an instructor of painting in London, England at the Harrow College of Art, and in New York City at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students’ League. For several years Zwarenstein also worked as a cover illustrator for publications such as Forbes Magazine and the National Review before having his first solo exhibition in 1998 at the Eleanor Ettinger Gallery in New York City. Since then he has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. Alex Zwarenstein’s work is among the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe, the New York Stock Exchange and the London City Council to name a few.
