Shot defending his homestead on Compensation Farm, Bubi- Umguza during a sustained attack. was murdered on Independence day, 2000. His bravery in fighting at his home was also shown earlier when John Norvall, was ambushed and killed by dissidents in 1987. Martin raced from his farm to help John. John had bled to death by the time Martin arrived, but he disturbed the dissidents at the scene of the crime, and wounded one of them as they fled. Martin was awarded a medal for bravery (by the president of Zimbabwe) for another act of bravery – again, not waiting for back up, Martin leapt to his friend’s rescue when George Parkin was grabbed by a huge crocodile. A tug of war ensued – which Martin eventually won. He joked that he decided it was easier to face the croc than George’s wife, Lesley Elizabeth Parkin! Martin Olds was the kind of man most people would know only through Hollywood, or fictional novels of grand adventures. During the seven year bush war in Rhodesia, Martin served with the last mounted infantry unit of modern military history – the famous Grey Scouts – an elite unit much feared by the communist terrorist of the Zimbabwe liberation movement. In 1980 Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe. Unlike so many who fled, he remained in the newly independent nation to try and build a life for his wife and children in the uncertainty of the emerging communist regime of Robert Mugabe. His raw courage became known throughout Southern Africa when he rescued a friend from a crocodile, literally snatching the man from the jaws of the beast and dragging him from the water with the croc in close pursuit. For this remarkable act of courage, he was awarded a medal for heroism by the government. Martin Olds was murdered at the hands of the insurgents he fought over two decades back. Equipped by the Zimbabwean government with Soviet made AK-47s assault rifles, attacked him while he was alone on his farm, having sent his handicapped wife and two children to the relative safety of town. As the attackers rallied near Martin’s farm, the Zimbabwe police stood idle in their station. As the attack began, the police cordoned off the area to ensure no other farmers would come to his aid. The Zimbabwe police, in collaboration with Mugabe’s men, even blocked an ambulance enroute to the Olds’ farm. Alone, Martin fought a pitched gun battle. By most estimates he was outnumbered one hundred and fifty to one. Armed only with a shotgun, hunting rifles and two pistols, Martin held his attackers at bay for over three hours. Shot in the leg, he splinted his wounded limb and continued to fight. In the end, his attackers set the farmhouse on fire. When Martin was forced from the inferno, he was shot again then brutally beaten about the head. A final bullet from an AK-47 ended his life. Martin Olds was killed because he was white and had the courage to speak out against Robert Mugabe and his corrupt regime. The death of Martin Olds was a tragedy in itself. What makes it more the tragedy is that his murder was sanctioned, if not ordered, by the leader of Zimbabwe – Robert Gabriel Mugabe. Ironically, Martin Olds was ordered killed by the very man who had pinned a medal for heroism on his chest. |

| 716 | Olivier, Henry | Dr. An old boy of Umtali High School, was the Resident Director and Chief Engineer in the firm of Gibb, Coyne and Sogei (Pvt) Ltd. Civil Consulting Engineers for the design and building of Kariba Dam. They were representatives of a French company, and Coyne and Bellier reviewed the design. There were a multitude of engineering companies and construction contractors but the main civil works were awarded to Impresit Kariba who were Italian and most of the skilled artisans were Italians, with labour mainly likely recruited from Salisbury based companies (as opposed to the local residents). Olivier went on to be a world authority on large dams and was awarded the extremely rare honour of Doctor of Engineering by the University of the Witwatersrand (DE: he already had a PhD) and is considered by most Old Borderers to be one of their most distinguished old boys, given the magnitude and humanity of his life’s work. So a Rhodesian of Afrikaner heritage more than anyone could be said to have “built Kariba”even if he didn’t so much as touch a shovel. A truly multi-national effort. Once wrote a book called Damit. He was a world-famous engineer who was one of the team building the Mulberry Harbour. He was chief engineer for the designing and building of Kariba. Plus many very famous dams. His name iwas Henry Olivier. |

| 1219 | Osborn, Leslie John Dennis (Ozzy) 1978 | Umtali citizen who died on Wednesday 18 October 1978. Leslie, affectionately known as “Ozzy”, was born at 8 Trevarno Terrace in Tovil, Maidstone, Kent, England on 7 January 1925, eldest of two brothers to Harold George Osborn and Ethel Beatrice Osborn (nee Brown). Educated in England, Leslie lost his right eye when stick fighting with other pupils. World War II began in 1939 and Leslie, despite having only one eye, was accepted into the Royal Corps of Engineers, and at age 15 years and four months, must have been one of the youngest soldiers to be evacuated from Dunkirk in May/June 1940. He was a crack shot and was only demobbed while with the Allied occupation forces in Germany in 1946. His work with the Royal Engineers entailed maintaining tanks and heavy plant equipment. Leslie left England for Rhodesia in 1956 with Lang Engineering who were contracted to work on Kariba Dam during the construction period. It was at Kariba where he met Marcia Volkenbourn whom he married. Two children were born to the union, Marilyn, in 1957, and John, in 1959. (Marcia and Leslie were later divorced.) Having made Rhodesia his home Leslie joined Whitehead and Jack, a water drilling (and rig) company, in Salisbury, and was transferred to Umtali in 1970 as Area Manager for the Eastern Highlands and the Lowveld. Kind and generous, and Blessed with a fun-loving personality and great sense of humour, Leslie enjoyed cricket, loved musicals and listening to relaxing music. He loved his job and was a natural water diviner (by hand), and made friends easily while travelling for Whitehead and Jack. As a member of the Rhodesian Pigeon Society where he raced homing pigeons, he also made new friends by spotting homing pigeons circling houses and stopping for introduction and conversation. On that fateful day at approximately 13h15 the vehicle he was driving detonated a boosted landmine near D and E Quarries outside Umtali, Leslie dying instantly. Loved by all, he left his daughter Marilyn, son John and brother Bernard to mourn his passing. His ashes, as per his wishes to travel Rhodesia, were scattered to the winds on the mountain above Christmas Pass. |
