| 25 | Ullyett, Kevin (b 1972) | Kevin Ullyett (born 23 May 1972) was a Rhodesian-born former professional tennis player from Zimbabwe. His primary success on the tour was in men’s doubles. Ullyett won 34 doubles titles during his career, including two Grand Slams at the 2001 US Open and the 2005 Australian Open with countryman Wayne Black. He also competed in the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, coming in at fifth place in 2004 with Black. In mixed doubles, Ullyett won the 2002 Australian Open with Daniela Hantuchová. He reached the final of Wimbledon in 2002 with Hantuchová, and the semifinals there in 2003 and 2005 with Hantuchová and Liezel Huber, respectively. He and Huber were also the runners-up at the 2005 Australian Open. Ullyett’s compatriot and long-time doubles partner, retired at the end of 2005. He then played with Paul Hanley for two seasons, then with Jonas Björkman, who retired at the end of 2008, and finally with Brazilian Bruno Soares. His father, represented Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in cricket and field hockey. He was part of the national team that competed at the 1964 Olympics (they beat New Zealand 2–1 and came 11th out of 15). He made his final tennis appearance at the South African Open in February 2010 (partnering with Wesley Moodie) eighteen years after he first appeared there in 1992 competing in his first ATP Tour event. He had over 500 career wins. He lived with his wife and two children in London. Their first child, Jemima, was born in 2005. Kevin Ullyett moved to South Africa at a young age. Born in Salisbury. Rob played first-class cricket for Rhodesia in Currie Cup. The all-rounder was one of six ‘South African Cricket Annual Cricketers of the Year’ in 1964 on the back of a strong Currie Cup season in which he scored 449 runs at 49.88. It was the first time that he had played as a specialist batsman and he was Rhodesia’s leading run-getter that season. Despite having success with the ball in previous years, he didn’t add to his 46 first-class wickets from that season until his retirement, only bowling the occasional over. He had twice taken seven wickets in an innings back in 1958, with a best of 7/42 against North Eastern Transvaal at Benoni. Ullyett represented Rhodesia in field hockey at the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo and scored a goal in their 4–1 loss to Great Britain. It appeared that he had suffered “target fixation” and failed to timeously pull out of the dive after delivering his weapons. He was 23. He was the son of English-born Jonathan Unsworth, a grocer (at the time), and Isabella Tweedy. His parents were living on Railway Street in Ballynahinch when he was born. He traded waistcoats and blankets for little slave children captured in Matabele raids, and fed, clothed and sheltered them. He lived for more than 30 years with a girl summoned by Lobengula out of a bevy of dancing maidens and given to him. His name is known to nearly everyone in Bulawayo District through the place (Fort Usher) named after him. Yet the man himself, W.F. Usher remains one the least-known of Bulawayo’s pre-pioneers. Every paper he had was unfortunately lost. He had a tall, upright Coloured son, who claims that he was born in 1888, named James. W.F. Usher entered Matabeleland in 1883, but James insists that his father knew Old Bulawayo well, and there is evidence to support the fact that he may have been there. The old town was burnt on Lobengula’s orders on September 15th, 1881. Usher had married Mzondwasi, although a Kumalo, was not a daughter or close relative of Lobengula, but belonged to another senior family in the clan.She was given to Usher by the King while dancing before him with other maidens. Usher dared not refuse her, and the girl, though terrified, knew that she must obey the King or be killed. She bore him seven children, and she and Usher lie buried side by side on Tshabala Farm. Lobengula was very friendly with the trader, and called him Mampondweni, because he came from Pondoland. Among the goods which Usher brought wagon from the South, was a chair sent to Lobengula by Queen Victoria. When the King saw it he laughed and said: “No, I cannot sit on that Mampondweni. But you must sit on it when you come to see me.” And Usher did so every time he went to the King’s house. Later, however, Lobengula did use this Royal gift, because the Jesuit missionary, Father Croonenbergh, described him as seated in ‘a great leather armchair of which the back is adorned with a crown,’ behind, ‘a heavy table which served formerly as a transport chest in the heavy commercial wagons.’ Instead of the traditional ivory, and hides, Usher was offered a strange, heartbreaking form of ‘currency’ in exchange for his trade goods – slave children. The Matabele warriors, said James, loved the waistcoats Usher had in his store at Usher’s Kop (near Fort Usher). In Exchange for one of them, or a blanket, they would hand over a child, a boy or girl, too small to work, captured in a raid on some Mashona or other vassal kraal. Apalled, no doubt by their plight, Usher urged the Matabele to bring the children in exchange for goods. He fed and clothed and sheltered them, and when they were big enough, they worked for him, mainly as cattle herders. However, disaster struck, in 1896 when the Rebellion broke out. Usher sent his family, and some of the slave children, into the laager in Bulawayo. He himself, however, flatly refused to leave his property. During the night he changed his mind-perhaps through anxiety about his family – and followed them. He rode into a party of rebels, who said they were going to kill him – until their Induna reminded them that this was the man Lobengula had forbidden them to harm. Unfortunately the Royal protection did not extend to the slave children, and after letting Usher through, the rebels, went to his property and killed everyone on it. Those who went with the Usher family, survived the Rebellion. Incidently, ‘Mampodweni,’ with his exceptional knowledge of the Matabele, warned the pioneers that a rebellion was coming, and was scoffed at for his pessimism. It was on the eve of his flight from Bulawayo, that Lobengula forbade his warriors to kill Usher and Fairbairn – the only two white men left in the town. Thanks to him, when the white troops arrived, they found the pair sitting on the corrugated iron roof of Dawsons Store, with their possessions piled around them, quietly playing poker. Cattle and horses belonging to Usher were also stolen from “Matabele” Wilson’s farm near Bulawayo during the Rebellion. Some time afterwards, the family moved to Chabalala Farm, where they lived until the old trader died on September 28, 1916. His grave – together with that of the woman given to him long before by Lobengula, and their son Jubilee – lies near the remains of a stone kraal that he built. . From the Cape colony.
